TitleENGINEERING AND ENERGY ECONOMICS
ObjectivesSupply to the engineers all the tools necessary to know all the aspects of the matter and to manage and coordinate projects with economic and ecological sustainability.
ContentsProfessor Urban course objective is to introduce the basic concepts of natural gas, coal, nuclear power and other renewable energy sources, in the outlook of all the ENERGY sector. We will spend a special analysis on the natural gas, a source that was well closed in the drawers of the Monopoly and Oligopoly companies and therefore little known. The purpose of the course is to introduce technically complicated matters and commercially very complex: interactions between costs, prices, values, supply, demand, competition, monopolies, technology, transportation, contracts and scale economies, all with the objective to define the comparative cost of the kWh on the Italian market. The course is planned for the PhD students in Energy of the Engineering Faculty of “La Sapienza” University of Rome. There will be, in the course, practical simulation’s exercises with a work methodology that remains valid over time and allows to consider the energy problem in a professional manner and not on the emotional basis. About the natural gas, the course will highlight that, in Italy, natural gas is not a commodity. We will go in deep on the take-or-pay contracts, how to rate a nuclear power plant, a coal, a gas field and a gas storage depleted field. We will analyze also how to evaluate goods not having market reference prices and what are the critical points of the various energy systems. We will examine in deep a methodology of work that remains valid over time and enable the students to manage the energy problems with the skills requested by the energy industry. With this course the knowledge of the economic issues of gas, uranium, coal, oil, solar and wind energy, should become a common matter of those who are interested in energy sector.
